The
Gallery is a community oriented forum for the exhibition of the work of emerging
and established artists.
The central focus of work presented is in the field
of progressive and avant-garde visual ideas, though it is not limited to abstract
or modernist art. The exhibition space, in the New Haven Free Public Library,
in downtown New Haven and adjacent to the Yale University campus. It is provided
without budgetary provisions for art or curatorial functions. Its independent
curator, Johnes Ruta, is a creative writer, business/computer analyst and
web designer, arts activist and historical theorist, and formerly the art director
of the York Square Cinema from 1988 to 2005, and Managing Editor of The Entertainer,
a cultural newsmagazine published in Fairfield County, from 1973-1978.

BEFORE THE DATE OF INSTALLATION.

Exhibition Format:
Artist
Expenses
1. The gallery provides no budget either for exhibition
expenses or for the services of the independent curator. All material expenses
are the responsibility of the artist.
EXPENSES consist of:
(1)
the printing of invitational postcards (approximately $145 for the printing of
500 cards, through Modern Postcard). Digital printing templates are prepared and
submitted by the curator at least one month in advance of the scheduled Artist
Reception. Approximately 250 of the printed cards are required for the curator's
public mailing list and hand-outs.
(2) the cost of 220 post card STAMPS
for the gallery mailings. The artist is also responsible for postage for their
own mailings.
(3) the cost of all refreshments (beverages, fruit, cheese,
etc) of the artist's reception, approximately $60.
(4) There is a 25%
sales commission on the sales of artwork.
Curatorial preparation & publicity services are provided "pro bono artis."
Advance preparations
2.
Artists and specific artwork are selected for exhibition at the discretion of
the art director.
Exhibitions are booked an average of 6 to 8 months
in advance.
3.
Artists interested in the exhibition space are invited to contact the art director
at any time.
Community groups sponsoring art are also encouraged to utilize
the space, which has a high
public visibility.
4.
REQUIRED SUBMISSION OF MATERIAL for exhibition consideration:
The
following materials are REQUIRED FOR CONSIDERATION to exhibit at the Gallery.
** These materials MUST be submitted to the Curator a MINIMUM OF 3 MONTHS
BEFORE the projected exhibition start date, or the exhibition can not be scheduled

(a)
REQUIRED Samples of artwork -- A MINIMUM OF 4 IMAGES ARE REQUIRED
:
Images will be used strictly at the Curator's
discretion -- for example, for inclusion on the E-Mail Press Release, for design
of Invitation Postcard, and for Web-Page images to be added to the Curator's Website
http://azothgallery.com/ .

PLEASE NOTE:
Providing images to the curator is to be understood by the Artist
as COPYRIGHT PERMISSION & RELEASE, FOR USE of such images AS CURATOR SEES
FIT, and is REQUIRED as a condition for exhibition.
Images
are REQUIRED in one of following formats :
(i) Color Digital
image in PDF or JPG format for Windows PC, minimum resolution of 355 dots per
sq inch, on a CD-ROM or by email to the Curator.
MINIMUM
SIZE of digital image MUST be no smaller than 400 KB.
(ii)
Glossy 35mm photographs are also accepted.
(iii) **** Computer Printer
image prints-outs are of low-density and therefore NOT acceptable. ****

**** Slides are NOT acceptable. ****

A short narrative ARTIST STATEMENT is REQUIRED.
(d)
If return of any materials is needed by the Artist, a Stamped Self-Addressed envelope
is required.

An interview with a prospective artist is required which can be arranged for a
weekend day or a
weekday evening.
6.
Collaborative pre-selection of artwork by art director and artist, is made according
to curatorial
criteria, with respect to artists preferences.
Publicity
7. POST
CARD INVITATION: ALL Postcard invitation designs MUST BE
APPROVED BY THE CURATOR, in order to INSURE QUALITY, proper format,
and INCLUSION of NEW HAVEN FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY Requirements.
8.
Publicity letters, a Press Release, and art gallery listings, prepared by the
art director with artist provided resume’, bio, comments, and a sample glossy
photo of one piece of work, are sent to all regional newspapers, classical
music and alternative radio stations and art periodicals, including
:
The Sunday New York Times Connecticut Weekly, the Connecticut
Post, Connecticut Magazine, the New Haven Register, all of the ADVOCATE local
offices, and other mainstream and alternative presses, as well as to all independent
and assignment art reviewers.
PUBLICITY is compiled by the
Curator according to information submitted by the Artist as required above:
THE
ARTIST IS RESPONSIBLE TO SUBMIT ANY PRESS RELEASE CORRECTIONS TO THE CURATOR PRIOR
TO THE DEADLINE DATE FOR PRESS RELEASES, usually the last day of the month two
months prior to scheduled exhibition. FINAL CONTENT OF THE PRESS RELEASE IS AT
THE DISCRETION OF THE CURATOR.
9. Special arrangements are made to meet with regional art critics to promote exhibition awareness.
Installation
10.
PLEASE NOTE: Artworks are NOT INSURED against loss by fire, theft, or damage.
Supervision of the Gallery installations are the Responsibility and the
full Determination of the Curator.
All installation placements and design
decisions are at the full discretion of the Curator only.
NO
LIABILITY IS ACCEPTED by the Art Director or the New Haven Free Public Library.
The artist's signature on a Exhibition Registration and Liability Release
Form is REQUIRED to be sent to the Art Librarian in advance of scheduling an exhibition.
Note: no theft or vandalism of artwork has ever occurred as of this date.
11. Installation or retrieval of artwork will be on a Saturday morning, beginning at 11:00 AM. Installation time must be coordinated with the time of retrieval of work of the previous exhibition, and not interfere with the access of Library patrons.
12. Exhibition periods are from 4 to 5 weeks.
13.
Paintings on canvas to be exhibited MUST be mounted on stretchers, or panel, and
framed.
Works on paper must be matted and framed. Photography must be exhibited
under glass, preferably framed.
14. ALL Artwork MUST be WIRED FOR HANGING.
15. Exhibition of sculpture is at the discretion of the curator and Library administration,
due to space limitations.
16. Installation materials and tools provided by the art director. An extra hammer is useful to bring.
17. At least ½ of exhibited artwork is to be available for sale.
18. A PRICE LIST is to
be prepared by artist. Items not available for sale should be indicated as
"$NFS".
Prices set at less than $2000 for larger pieces, and less
than $1000 for smaller, are RECOMMENDED for the regional art market. Final
pricing of artwork is at the discretion of the artist.
19. A COMMISSION RATE of 25% of a sale transaction is in effect.
20. A brief ARTIST STATEMENT on 8 ½ X 11 paper, with extra wide margins) is created by the curator for display with the exhibition, to be mounted on the wall in a matte frame provided by the curator.
21. TITLE LABELS, preferably typed, are also requested for each piece of artwork.

Artist Reception:
An invitational opening
is optional but can easily be arranged. Receptions are arranged for a Saturday
afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30 PM. During summer hours, Thursday evening receptions
are scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
22. Printed,
two-sided post-card invitations ar recommended, in an informational format recommended
by the curator.
23. Invitations
should be submitted to a printer at least eight weeks before the scheduled reception
date. Postage for 220 Post-Card stamps is required from the artist.
24. Refreshments,
including beverages, cheese and crackers, seltzer or juices, fruit, etc. are
the responsibility of the artist to provide. Tables and tablecloths,
cups and napkins are provided by the art director.
25. Members
of the press, arts community, and interested public are invited by the art director
to promote the artwork and prospective sales.
